Managing Adult Relationships in the School Community
Some workplace conflict is inevitable and has the potential to undermine some of the key fundamentals to a positive working environment. However, there are ways and means to minimise or reduce workplace conflict and to even turn it around into a positive experience.
The National Centre for Leadership and Innovation (NCLI), supported by IPPN, presents Your School and Confronting Conflict seminar. This seminar will promote a change in culture by enabling school leaders to embrace conflict, recognise that it is going to happen and give you the necessary skills to manage it should it occur. This seminar will develop effective conflict management skills and equip you with the practical knowledge you need to deal confidently with any conflict that may arise within your school community. You will leave with practical solutions to real workplace problems.

‘Teaching Principals – Leadership and Learning in Small Schools’
This programme is designed for Teaching Principals will cater for 2 specific cohorts in the Teaching Principal Community – it will also include content for Newly Appointed Teaching Principals.
- Teaching Principals in 1 & 2 teacher schools
- Teaching Principals 3 – 7 teacher schools
For all principals the current demands of school leadership are challenging. For the teaching principal those challenges are combined with the responsibilities attached to being a class teacher.

This event will present a practical approach addressing many of the issues that are the day-to-day experience of teaching principals – overload, prioritising, time management, communication, policies, governance, planning and teaching – and more.
The course provides an opportunity to
- step back, reflect, meet and dialogue with principals in similar situations
- develop good practices.
Topics Covered will include
- School self-evaluation
- policies and legislative impacts on schools
- Governance and issues relating to new Boards of Management
Peer Collaboration
Smaller peer groups for leaders of 1& 2 teacher schools and 3–7 teacher schools will provide opportunities for development through
- sharing common experiences
- working together on planning
- strategies for more effective communication and work-management

Pre-Retirement Seminars 2014

IPPN presented two Pre-Retirement seminars in May 2014, one in the Citywest Hotel, Dublin on Wednesday, May 28th; the other in Cork on Wednesday May 21st.
This one-day seminar, which ran from 9am to 3.30pm, covered the emotional, personal, professional and financial aspects of retirement, including:
- Retirement Readiness – psychologically and emotionally
- Preparing for Retirement – professionally and personally
- Communication to BOM, children, staff and parents
- The aftermath to stepping down
- Financial Advice:
- Planning for retirement
- Pensions
- Investments
- Wills, etc.
Note: DES substitute cover is provided for one school day for attendance at a pre-retirement seminar. Attendance is subject to BoM approval. Further information is available in DES Circular 32/2007 – Teacher Absences, Section 1.
Principals' Professional Briefing Day 2013

IPPN will host a Professional Briefing Day for Principals next Wednesday, 11th September, in Citywest Convention Centre. NCCA, the Teaching Council, SESS, PDST, Carecall, the DES Inspectorate and the National Induction Programme for Teachers will present information that will directly impact on you as school leader over the coming year. Each presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. There is a limited number of places still available for this event and early booking is advised.
