E-scéal 190 - Conference 2009 - Workshop Registration now active

This year's conference workshops are scheduled to take place on Thursday 29th January at 1pm (Session A) & 3pm (Session B) and Friday 30th January at 2pm (Session C). You can now register for one workshop at each of these three sessions by following the process outlined below. It is important that you read all the points before registering.

IMPORTANT

  • You cannot register for workshops by responding to this e-mail or by telephoning the Support Office as you will need to enter your Roll Number on the webpage.
  • Ensure you have access to the internet and a printer before you start the registration process.
  • There are THREE workshop sessions in total. You can only select ONE workshop in each SESSION. To move to the next session, scroll down the page.
  • You can only register once i.e. you cannot go back in and make changes once you have submitted your selection. Therefore, please ensure you select workshops for all three sessions before completing registration.
  • Make sure to click on the Register button after selecting your choice of up to 3 workshops
  • Workshops may be limited in capacity due to the nature of the workshop or room size
  • When a workshop is fully subscribed it will not be available for selection
  • You do not need to attend all three workshop sessions, or indeed any workshops, if you would prefer to spend the time networking or on other activities!

HOW TO REGISTER

  • Before going on-line, please study the list of workshops below and make note of your preferred selection. Due to capacity constraints, your first choice may not be available.
  • Using your internet browser, go to www.ippnworkshops.com
  • Click in the grey box in the centre of the screen. Type in your roll number, click Submit
  • Select which workshop you would like to attend for each of the 3 sessions, scrolling down using the horizontal scroll bar to progress down the page
  • If you do not wish to attend any workshop for a particular session, click on "No workshop"
  • When you are sure that you are happy with your selection, click on the Register button at the bottom of the screen
  • Once registered, an email will be sent to your nominated email address containing the details of the workshops you selected for each session
  • Print out the email and bring it with you to Conference. This is your record of workshop registration.

Classroom Management of In-Class Support (Fiona King)

The aim of this session is to discuss the role of the support teacher as an inclusion support teacher i.e. providing in-class support for pupils with SEN. We will look at the challenges of in-class support, models of in-class support, how to do station teaching, peer tutoring and we will have a workshop on a co-operative learning lesson based on the class reader.

Cultivating a high-quality induction programme for Newly Qualified Teachers

This workshop will explore the concept of induction as a unique phase in the professional life of a teacher and in particular the:

  • Transition from being a student of teaching to a teacher of students and the conditions which shape the effective transition
  • Key stages in the transition phase and the priority aspects for consideration at the different stages
  • The role of the Principal and the whole school in the management of the induction process.

The workshop will draw on research from the different phases of the National Pilot Project on Teacher Induction - Primary Strand and, in particular, Phase 6.

Behaviour Matters: Developing a Sustainable Code of Behaviour in Schools

Preparation for and managing staff meetings

In this workshop preparation for staff meetings will be explored as a necessary prerequisite to get things done in this valuable time for the whole school staff. Strategies to manage staff meetings will also be explored.

Leading a school with multi-class classrooms

(PPDS)

The focus of this workshop will be on planning and classroom organisation strategies used by teachers in multi-class settings to successfully plan for and manage the implementation of the primary curriculum.

Managing relationships with challenging adults in the school community

This workshop will focus on the realities that present when dealing with the management of relationships with challenging adults in the school community. The workshop will assist participants in reflecting on their current practices and will discuss effective strategies for dealing with specific circumstances. It is hoped that participants will be willing to share their own approaches and experiences.

Workplace Bullying

This workshop will examine the nature of workplace bullying with reference to targets and perpetrators. The effects of bullying on the individual and the organisation will be outlined. The role of the Principal in providing all employees with an environment that is free from any form of workplace bullying and harassment will be considered. Finally the workshop will examine how Principals may be bullied and what they can do.

Selecting Staff : Interview Strategies

The aim of the workshop is to focus on the key role of the interview in the selection of staff, provide practical guidelines for each step of the interview process, identify and share interview strategies that have worked and discuss issues around interviewing that may be of interest.

Effective In-School Management

The workshop will examine how In-School Management structures can be put in place to promote curriculum development, instructional leadership, pastoral responsibilities and management of staff. We will look at the role of post-holders, examine the need for formal role descriptions and documentation of responsibilities associated with these roles and also look at the review of Posts of Responsibility.
