E-scéal 218 - National Alliance for Primary Education
- Published: 04 December 2009
Unpaid leave, pay cuts and pension contributions are all headline news and very important to all of us. But what about those with most to lose – the children in our schools who don’t have a collective voice of their own. IPPN and the National Parents Council – Primary (NPC-P) decided to convene a meeting of all the education partners at Primary level. The purpose of bringing together the National Alliance for primary Education was to make a single, coherent case for the protection of primary education from further cuts and to prioritise investment in first level as part of a strategy for national recovery.
The Alliance issued a pre-budget statement to remind the Government; that no matter how challenging public finances are, they cannot penalise the primary children in our care. Primary education is the foundation upon which children’s lives are built. As we all know, if the gap widens at Primary level it never closes.
Mr Fergus Finlay, CEO Barnardos, facilitated the meeting which was attended by representatives of all the Primary Education Partners, with the exception of one. The Catholic Primary School Managers Association (CPSMA) did not participate in the Alliance and instructed that any reference to CPSMA be removed from the joint statement that was issued on behalf of the Alliance.
