Planning Prompts
A person’s greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated, and a person who is appreciated will always do more than what is expected. As a school leader, there is much you can do to make the school community a place of positivity, creating a climate where staff are valued for their contributions and where the desire to continue contributing and striving for success is maintained.
Professional Guidance
Harnessing good working relationships with Parent Associations
To harness the goodwill of parents in the school community is vital, to ensure that they feel part of the school community, feel welcome and involved in the workings of the school, and hence a part of their child’s education.
It is always important for the members of the parent association (PA) committee to understand the role of the PA and its purpose in a school. Drawing on the experiences of school leaders, some practical guidance may be helpful in establishing good working relationships with the PA.
IPPN Response to the NCSE Policy Advice on Inclusive Education
IPPN welcomes the publication of the long-awaited NCSE policy advice paper on special schools and special classes entitled ‘An Inclusive Education for an Inclusive Society’.
A reflection on future provision in Ireland is both timely and necessary under the United Nations Charter for the Rights of People with Disabilities (UNCRPD). This advice paper, originally requested by Minister for Education Joe Mc Hugh in 2018, is based on research, an exploration of international developments in practice, and consultation with stakeholders and practitioners.
In St Brendan’s NS, Blennerville, we place a particular emphasis on wellbeing. Our latest initiative is a symbolic eraser with a powerful message on both sides of its sleeve stating; ‘IT’S OK TO MAKE MISTAKES & I AM LEARNING’. Similar to other initiatives mentioned above, this is a positive psychology intervention (PPI). These erasers were given to each child upon their return to school in September and they have been highly effective.
