In Response to Member Queries - Exemption from the study of Irish

Around this time, many IPPN members are asked to grant Certificates of Exemption from the study of Irish. It is important to comply strictly with the provisions of Circular 54/2022 when making such a decision, despite pressure which some parents may try to exert. Exemptions should only be granted in exceptional circumstances.

This is a professional matter for the Principal, in discussion with the relevant teachers, parents and pupil. It goes to the heart of Teaching and Learning – the core responsibility of the Principal.

Grief remains a sensitive and often misunderstood topic in schools, creating additional hurdles for pupils. Educators play a vital role in creating a nurturing school environment that provides empathy and support through understanding and compassion, within appropriate boundaries.
