- Did you know?
After what has been a very busy few weeks, it may be an opportune time to review all that has happened so far. Not every day may have been a good day, but there was good in every day. What went well? What needs some reflection? What will I continue to do? What will I do differently? Remember that you can do this job, you cannot do it all and you cannot do it on your own. Decide your priorities and schedule those priorities for the week. Ask for help where needed.

DE Survey on Free School Books Scheme
The DE survey on the implementation of the Free Primary Schoolbooks Scheme closes tomorrow 20th September. IPPN encourages every school to complete it, as it will inform the DE in terms of how the scheme is resourced, supported and implemented in future years. See Esinet/OLCS for the link.
What are the mandatory policies?
This was one of the questions asked at last week’s City and County Network Meetings. This short webinar from the Ducks in a Row series takes you through it.
IPPN Position Paper on School Leaders’ Wellbeing
In case you missed the link in E-scéal on 20th June, we include it once again.
The longitudinal Irish Principal and Deputy Principal Health & Wellbeing Surveys 2022-2024 provide a wealth of information on the wellbeing of Irish school leaders. The most recent report shows that four of the six negative wellbeing scores of school leaders (burnout, stress, sleep disorders and cognitive stress) are now more than double the scores of the healthy working population. It also highlights that 54% of primary school leaders are within the severe or high categories of burnout.
The Advocacy & Communications committee of the IPPN National Council has developed a comprehensive position paper on School Leaders’ Wellbeing, which
- sets out the issues that contribute to these worrying scores
- considers their impact on leadership and school effectiveness
- identifies the supports that are currently in place
- highlights what is being done elsewhere
- describes what IPPN is doing to improve the sustainability of school leadership
- makes recommendations and proposals to school leaders, boards of management, IPPN and the Department of Education to improve wellbeing.
