- Did you know?
At this time of year, as with most times, school leaders can get overwhelmed with the sheer number of tasks to be completed each day. Even though you do not think that you have the time for reflection, considering the following may free up some valuable time to focus on your core purpose of leading teaching and learning.
Are you currently doing something that someone else could be doing, should be doing or is being paid to do?
A Guide to the Leadership of Teaching and Learning
The leadership of teaching and learning is core to the purpose of school leadership. IPPN’s sustainable leadership project has clearly established that school leaders are consistently diverted from it, undermining our effectiveness and the sustainability of our roles.
IPPN has developed a resource to support and empower your instructional leadership - the Guide to the Leadership of Teaching & Learning.
It is intended that schools will use it to reflect upon the practice of leadership of teaching and learning in their particular context. We hope that it will bring about a more balanced, distributed practice of leadership, with a greater focus on our core business of teaching and learning.

Sustainable Leadership Project - Progress Report 2024
IPPN initiated the Sustainable Leadership project due to the increasing levels of challenge, frustration and disillusionment experienced by school leaders in recent years.
This week, we published the 2024 Progress Report on the Sustainable Leadership Project which details:
- what school leadership needs, to be effective and sustainable
- the latest data on leadership workload, sustainability health and wellbeing
- specific proposals to enhance leadership capacity, effectiveness and sustainability
- the resources that IPPN has developed and the steps being progressed to empower effective and sustainable school leadership.
IPPN will continue to develop this work and remains steadfast in its commitment to the achievement of systemic reform of the practice of school leadership.

Irish Primary School Leaders’ Health and Wellbeing Research Report
In 2022, IPPN commissioned a research study due to concerns about the impact on the health and wellbeing of school leaders arising from increasing role complexity and workload.
This week, we published the third and final report of the longitudinal study - Irish Primary School Leaders’ Health and Wellbeing – a Three Year National Study. It analyses the data from this year’s survey, charts trends over the three-year period, draws conclusions from the data and recommends specific actions that will impact positively on the health and wellbeing of school leaders.
Your engagement with this research study is appreciated. It has provided sobering, impactful data to underpin the advocacy work IPPN is doing to enhance leadership capacity, effectiveness and sustainability.
