Planning Prompts
As school leaders, we often think that we have to resolve every issue for everyone. Not all problems are yours to solve. Equally, you do not have to be involved in every aspect of the school’s work, to the point that you are doing most of the work yourself. This is unsustainable.
Consider the role of co-leadership in the school. Arrange for the principal, deputy principal and the ISM team to meet to discuss building leadership capacity, possibly for the coming term. The Guide to the Leadership of Teaching & Learning – School Culture may prove helpful in progressing this area with the team. See below for details.

The Guide to the Leadership of Teaching and Learning – School Culture
The Leadership Considerations on School Culture were inadvertently omitted from the final version of this IPPN publication. The section on Organisational Routines was incorrectly formatted and should have been displayed as a section in its own right. Theseerrors,on pages 7 and 8, have been rectified in the new epublication version. A downloadable, one-page addendum hasbeen prepared and can be inserted into your hard copy, if you have one.
School Culture: Leadership considerations
-
A key determinant of this culture or environment is the quality of relationships within the school community.
-
The more those relationships are characterized by mutual trust and respect, the more likely it is that culture and environment will be created and sustained.
-
For those with leadership and management roles, school culture is both the most demanding and the most deserving of time and energy.
-
The creation and maintenance of this school culture requires consistent cultivation by school leaders.
-
To ensure that consultation and collaboration are meaningful requires school leaders to be fully present in their interactions with others.

Be Well, Lead Well
Tip #15 Sleep Hygiene
Despite how important sleep is to physical and mental well-being, you may find it challenging to get enough quality sleep each night. The impact of poor sleep can be felt in all areas of your life. The sleep habits you follow each day – known as ‘sleep hygiene’ – can have a positive effect on how well you sleep.
Disconnect from Devices in the Hour Before Bed
Tablets, smartphones, and laptops can keep your brain wired, making it hard to truly wind down. The light from these electronic devices can also suppress your natural production of melatonin. As much as possible, try to disconnect for an hour or more before going to bed.

The relationship between physical activity, screen time, and children’s vision health
Eoin Kerin, PhD Researcher at the Centre for Eye Research Ireland – TU Dublin is conducting a PhD research study on the relationship between physical activity, screen time, and children’s vision health—specifically how these lifestyle factors may be linked to the increasing prevalence of myopia (short-sightedness).
We are currently gathering insights from teachers, coaches, parents, and eye care professionals, and I’dgreatly appreciate your support in sharing the survey with your members. Teachers’ input is especially important, as they play a central role in shaping classroom practices and supporting students’ wellbeing. The aim of the research is to inform future school policy and public health guidance.
The survey is completely anonymous, takes 10 to15 minutes.
