Are Irish Parents Undervalued, asks School Principals?
President of the Irish Primary Principals’ Network (IPPN), Brendan McCabe, told members at their annual conference that the parents of Ireland have the single greatest influence on their children’s development.
“Recent ESRI research serves to highlight something we already know, but perhaps don’t often utilise to best effect – the positive influence of parents, as motivators in their children’s education. Schools need to make tangible use of these findings and work to get parents more involved in school life.”
Addressing over 1,100 principals attending the IPPN annual conference on Thursday, January 29th, Mr McCabe told members that parents and principals want the same thing, to maximise children’s learning.
Mr McCabe asked principals to offer guidance to parents where they can combine the best of both the school and home learning environment and experience.
Finally the President of the IPPN told attendees, “With real meaningful parental supports in place, inequality can be lessened, and surely that is an aspiration worth pursuing.”
