This morning in the Dail, I asked Tanaiste and Minister for Education if she would take steps to reverse the decision to remove the word 'science' from the title of her Department.

Just today, we see where according to a survey carried out among schools by the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland, the perception that science was 'removed from every day life' was a major barrier to a better take-up of those subjects, particularly at leaving cert level.

At a time when the Government claims that improving scientific and mathematical literacy is one of their objectives, it is clear that they are failing to get this message across.
