Price hike will force thousands off school bus [Independent.ie]

THOUSANDS of school children could be forced out of the school bus system if the Government pursues ticket price hikes, it has been claimed.

Proposals to charge parents €500 a year for their children to use the school bus are headed for the negotiating table again in early preparations for the December Budget.

The An Bord Snip report by economist Colm McCarthy previously proposed bus fees should be hiked to €500.

Families living in rural areas whose children use the bus scheme already suffered an increase last September when the charges rose from €168 to €300.

The school transport scheme, which is operated by Bus Eireann on behalf of the Department of Education, takes over 125,000 children to school a day.
