High cost of a good education

FOR the 55,000 young Irish people about to learn the results of their Leaving Certificate performances, tomorrow will be one of the biggest days of their lives. And those who will receive the information with the greatest anxiety and yet with the highest hopes are the four in every five of the 55,000 who want to go on to higher education.

They stand on the threshold of their adult lives at an extraordinary time. The whole world economy is in flux. Never in their lifetimes -- and seldom in their parents' lifetimes -- has there been such uncertainty and instability.
