A MEETING to plan the setting up of a Wexford Branch of National Parents Council Primary (NPC), will take place on Wednesday, March 3, in the Ashdown Park Hotel, Gorey, at 8 p.m. Currently, there is no branch in the county.

Jury convicts teacher of sexually abusing four boys [IrishExaminer]

Christopher Cosgrove (aged 66) of Cloughreevagh, Ballyhaunis Road, Claremorris, Co Mayo, had pleaded not guilty to 55 charges of indecent assault at the school on dates between July 1, 1968 and June 30, 1977.
He had denied 14 charges in relation to the first two complainants, nine charges in relation to a third, 17 charges in relation to a fourth complainant and one charge in relation to another boy.

Unions step up action in schools [educationmatters.ie]

Two teacher unions have directed members to refuse from March 8 to carry out duties of vacated middle-management posts that have not been filled.
The 900 or so assistant principals and the hundreds of special duties teachers who retired this school year have not been replaced, following a hiring moratorium imposed by the Government on the filling of vacant promotion posts.
The Government's aim was to save the additional €8,520 paid to an assistant principal and €3,769 paid to a special duties teacher.

The majority of adults have trust in teachers, are satisfied with the way they do their work and understand the complexity of the role, a survey says.
A survey of 1,000 adults, carried out on behalf of The Teaching Council by independent market research company IReach, shows the majority of respondents have a high level of trust in teachers and are satisfied with the way teachers do their work.

Sex education key to curb rise in lone parenthood, says Hanafin [Independent.ie]

SOCIAL and Family Affairs Minister Mary Hanafin yesterday stressed the importance of sex education as a means of tackling the continuing rise in the number of lone parents.
Ms Hanafin was responding to the findings of the report, which identified a doubling of lone-parent families between 1996 and 2006.
Co-author Dr Pete Lunn of ESRI, suggested the Government should consider supporting lower income groups, where the risk of marital breakdown and lone parenting was significantly higher.
