Woman jailed as children fail to attend school [IrishExaminer]

A WOMAN has been jailed for failing to send her daughter and two sons to school.

The Limerick woman is the 10th person to receive a custodial sentence this year for failing to educate her children, according to the Education Welfare Board. 

Meanwhile, prosecutions have increased from 51 in 2008 to 194 this year. 

Stuart Moloney, the education and welfare officer for Limerick city and county, said the woman had a daughter aged 14 and two sons aged 9 and 10. 

The girl was enrolled in a city secondary school and the boys enrolled in a primary school.

Minister announces new school building projects [schooldays.ie]

Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn has announced the development of 56 new school building plans as part of a 430 million euro investment in education infrastructure for 2012.

The proposals includes 26 new primary schools and nine secondary schools - as well as extensions to existing facilities - that will provide classroom resources for over 15,500 primary and 7,700 secondary pupils.

Mr Quinn said that as total enrolment in the education system is set to grow by around 70,000 by 2018, it is vital work is done to boost the number of places available.

Plans for 35 schools unveiled by Minister [IrishTimes]

THIRTY-FIVE schools will be built next year as the Department of Education plans for a continuing rise in pupil numbers.

Total enrolment in both primary and post-primary schools is expected to grow by about 70,000 between now and 2018 – by over 45,000 at primary level and 25,000 at post primary. Enrolment will continue to rise at post-primary level to the year 2024 at least.

Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn yesterday announced details of the major projects due to go to construction next year. These include 26 schools at primary level; 12 major extensions at primary level; nine schools at second level and nine major extensions at second level.

Announcing the programme, the Minister said: “We are prioritising investment in school buildings in line with the Government’s capital investment programme. We have to ensure that every child growing up in Ireland will have access to a physical school place.”

Minister Quinn seeks expressions of interest for positions on Boards of Léargas, HEA and QQAAI [education.ie]

The Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn T.D., is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced persons for positions on Boards of State Bodies and Agencies under the aegis of his Department where vacancies will occur up to 1st March 2012.

Vacancies will occur on the boards of Léargas, the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and the Qualifications and Quality Assurance Authority of Ireland (QQAAI).

The Minister said: "This is an opportunity for suitably qualified and experienced members of the public to play an active role in the education sector by influencing and shaping the policy direction of the State Bodies and Agencies under the aegis of my Department."

Expressions of interest will be sought from time to time to fill vacancies that will arise during 2012 on other Boards of State Bodies and Agencies under the aegis of the Department of Education and Skills.

The Department's website, www.education.ie, and the Public Appointments Service's website, www.publicjobs.ie, will advertise board vacancies as they arise.
