18th May 2009 - Primary Principals welcome plan to integrate education services

Statement by the Irish Primary Principals' Network:

Monday 18th May 2009 - 18.30

The announcement today by The Minister of State at the Department of Education and Science, Seán Haughey, TD, to create a new, single coordinated School Support Programme from next September was welcomed by the Irish Primary Principals' Network.

The plan, as announced, will merge the Home School Community Liaison Scheme (HSCL), the School Completion Programme (SCP) and the Visiting Teachers Service for Travellers (VTST) under a single management agency - the National Education Welfare Board (NEWB).

15th May 2009 - Mass Exodus of Principals will create Leadership Crisis in Primary Schools

Over 300 Principals of Primary Schools are set to retire at the end of the current school year. This exodus is unprecedented in modern times and is due mainly to the collective impact of the recent education cuts which are decimating primary education, lowering staff morale and making the role of the Principal stressful and frustrating.

1st May 2009 - When is a School Full?

Each school should ensure that its enrolment policy is fully inclusive, that it protects the rights of the whole school community and upholds the rights of those who seek to secure a place for their children in the school. To successfully defend a Section 29 Appeal, a school must adhere rigidly to its enrolment policy, which should be unambiguous in stating the point at which the Board determines the school to be full.

11th February 2009 - Primary Principals Appalled at Dismantling of Special Classes

The Irish Primary Principals' Network (IPPN) is saddened and appalled at the news that over 100 schools have been told to shut down their special classes for children with learning disabilities. 'How can it be that our most vulnerable children are the first to be targeted by these cuts', said Larry Fleming, President of IPPN. 'These are children who were given places in small classes because they were failing in large mainstream classes. Now, they are condemned to experience failure yet again, and the large mainstream classes are being asked to absorb this additional challenge' added Fleming.
