In a statement issued this evening, the Irish Primary Principals' Network expressed disappointment at the Government's announcement on water charges.

"Principals are relieved that the immediate crisis around the payment of large water charges by primary schools has been abated." said Larry Fleming, President of the Irish Primary Principals' Network. "IPPN welcomes today's announcement from the Taoiseach that schools should hold off on paying any water charge invoices for the moment. Principals are relieved at this development and await the clarification promised during the Christmas holiday.

The Irish Primary Principals' Network strongly condemn any effort made to add water charges to the running costs of schools. Primary schools are already in financial difficulty due to the soaring costs of heating oil and other utilities with only a minor increase in state funding announced in the Budget.

Water Charges for schools - another tax on parents
The Irish Primary Principals' Network (IPPN) is calling on the Minister for the Environment, Heritage & Local Government and the Minister for Education & Science to come up with a workable solution for schools on the question of water charges. "If not a derogation of these charges, then a direct payment from the DES budget to local authorities which would avoid high administration costs and additional VAT payments."
