Dismantling Inequity in Education - ICP in conversation with Mary Robinson, Former President of Ireland
Free for IPPN members, this webinar takes place on Wednesday 23rd February at 11am - you can register to attend live or to access the recording after the event.

The International Confederation of Principals (ICP) developed its own definition of Equity in 2019, to encourage, support and inspire its membership to develop a deeper understanding of what equity means in the context of education.

Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and Chair of 'The Elders', has worked extensively to promote peace, justice and human rights globally for many years. Former IPPN President Maria Doyle, who is the European Representative on the ICP Executive, will discuss inequity in education with Mary Robinson, a subject about which she is passionate and a key strategic objective of The Elders.

Leadership+ Article: The Mystery, the Myths, and the Magic of the Special School

For many, special education appears to be so different from mainstream provision that it becomes shrouded in mystery. A teacher in this special school was asked, (in hushed, perplexed tones) ‘Tell me… what do you do all day?’ Visitors to the school comment in surprise, it’s just like a school’.
Also, colleagues sometimes express a lack of confidence in their ability to teach in a special school.

Guidance Note on School Placement during 2020/2021
Guidance issued by the Teaching Council in August 2020 to schools on planning and facilitating school placement for the school year 2020/2021. The guidance continues to apply following the closure of schools for in-person learning since Christmas. The Teaching Council and Department had indicated that this guidance would be updated in January, but it is not now deemed necessary to do this and the current guidance as published in August 2020 remains in place.

The Teaching Council has launched guidance for teachers to make the best use of electronic communication and social media tools. It is intended that the guidance be a useful reminder for some and generate awareness for others, on the appropriate use of social media and electronic communication.

Irish Exemptions – Research Findings
SEALBHÚ, the research centre for the teaching and learning of Irish is hosting a webinar on Tuesday 23 February, 7.00pm on the topic of ‘The Negotiation of the Language Learner Identity and the Practice of Language Exemptions’. A discussion of the research and practice on how to provide an inclusive language learning environment for all students is being facilitated by Dr. Mary Caitlin Wight, a teacher educator in world languages at SUNY Geneseo, New York.
