Ukraine – Supporting Children in our School Communities
School communities have begun to welcome children from Ukraine and will continue to do so in the coming weeks. Images and talk of war can be upsetting and raise anxiety levels within the school community.
Inspectorate - Incidental Inspections
The Inspectorate has advised that the 2-day notice period for incidental inspections will remain in place until Easter. Some schools are using this time to identify issues they would like to discuss with the inspector during the visit.
Student Teachers – 5 Day Rule
The relaxation of the 5 day rule for eligible 3 & 4 years students (SI 68 of 2022) can now be recorded on OLCS. Student teachers can be paid for substitute teaching vacancies of 5 or more consecutive days up to 30 June 2022.
CPD & Croke Park Hours
PDST Technology in Education has advised that teachers completing online CPD with www.teacherCPD.ie may be eligible to include course participation time as part of their Croke Park Hours. The consent of the Board of Management will be required.
Covid 19 - Management of Cases & Contacts
The most recent advice and guidelines for managing Covid 19 was issued by the Department of Public Health. The guidelines came into effect on 28 February 2022. This is the most up-to-date information available to school communities.

Irish Sign Language (ISL) Scheme
An Irish Sign Language Scheme (ISL) has been announced by Ministers Foley and Madigan to support children whose primary language is ISL. Under the scheme, a package of dedicated specialist ISL supports will be allocated to relevant schools so these students have a more inclusive school experience.
Expansion of DEIS Programme
Minister for Education, Norma Foley has announced an expansion of the DEIS Programme. The programme will be extended to an additional 310 schools.
Inspectorate Consultation with Schools on SSE
The next phase of SSE will begin in September 2022. To guide and support the third cycle, the DE will be inviting all primary school leaders to participate in an online survey. With the assistance of school leaders, the DE is seeking to expand its research base by inviting teachers, parents and students in a sample of 50 primary schools, to participate in the research and is looking for the support of school leaders in this regard
Anti-Bullying Training Session for Parents
National Parents Council Primary is hosting free online workshops for primary school parents on anti-bullying from Monday 14 March – Wednesday 16 March 2022. The 75-minute session will provide guidance to parents on supporting their child(ren) regarding issues of bullying and provide information on the anti-bullying procedures for primary schools. Places are limited and booking early is advised.

External Research: Exploring the selection of Catholic Primary School Leaders in the Republic of Ireland
Cliona O’Keeffe, principal of Our Lady's BNS, Ballinteer, Dublin 16, is undertaking doctoral research with the University of Glasgow. Her study aims to establish the factors that principals, aspiring principals and selection board members perceive as important in deciding on the selection of individuals to become principals for Catholic primary schools.
