City's Muslim school is eyeing up new site as waiting list swells [Herald.ie]

Dublin City Council is considering possible expansion and relocation of one of the capital's State-funded religious schools.

Dublin's two Muslim schools have struggled to cope with pupil intake in the last few years, as the country's Muslim community grew from an estimated 32,500 in 2006 to almost 50,000 this year, according to the Islamic Foundation of Ireland.

While the process of expansion has been put on hold for one of the schools, the Muslim National School in Clonskeagh, the other, the North Dublin Muslim School , is currently in talks with Dublin City Council regarding planning permission.

"We're expecting The North Dublin Muslim School to lodge in due time a temporary application to be housed in another one of the buildings of St Joseph's School for Boys," a spokesperson for Dublin City Council told the Herald.

TB school must make up lost days [IrishExaminer]

A PRIMARY school forced to defer re-opening because of a TB outbreak will be expected to make up lost days during the remainder of the school year.

Ballintemple National School at Crab Lane, in the suburbs of Cork city, was scheduled to re-open next Monday, but following confirmation of three child cases of TB in pupils attending the school, start of term was deferred until September 6.

The Department of Education has confirmed the onus was on the school’s board of management to "make all reasonable efforts" to ensure days lost due to TB screening were re-couped. Under an agreement reached in 2007, primary schools are obliged to open 183 days of the year.

Back to school payments delayed [IrishTimes]

DELAYS IN processing the back-to-school clothing and footwear scheme mean 60 per cent of families in some parts of the State have not yet received their payment, according to figures from the HSE.

Some families will not receive funding in time for the new school term, which begins at the end of the week.

There has been a 20 per cent increase in applications for the vital Back-to-School Clothing and Footwear Allowance so far, the HSE has said. It is now receiving 1,000 claims a day.

The means-tested allowance, which operates from June 1st to September 30th, aims to help low-income families meet the cost of uniforms and footwear for children attending school.

It is also available for over-18s in full-time education who meet certain conditions.
