Teachers' unions split on pay deal [IrishTimes]

The Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) is saying no to the public service reform deal, its general secretary said today.
“My executive met yesterday and they unanimously have decided that this deal is unacceptable and that recommendation will be put to the annual conference of the union which takes place next week,” Peter MacMenamin told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland this morning.
Mr MacMenamin said it remained to be seen what the other unions would do, adding “I’m not going to look into the future and see what happens. There are other unions who are going to make decisions in regard to this deal”.

While the committee does not have the power to call on teachers to reject or accept the deal - it can express an opinion.
The Teachers' Union of Ireland said they were recommending their members to reject the deal.

Government should put 'Science' back into Education [labour.ie]

Just today, we see where according to a survey carried out among schools by the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland, the perception that science was 'removed from every day life' was a major barrier to a better take-up of those subjects, particularly at leaving cert level.
At a time when the Government claims that improving scientific and mathematical literacy is one of their objectives, it is clear that they are failing to get this message across.

TEACHER union leaders last night split on the public service pay and reform proposals.
The executive of the 15,000-strong Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) dramatically rejected the deal hammered out in Croke Park.
But the Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO) will urge its 30,000 members to accept it, in a postal ballot to be conducted after Easter.
The draft deal is certain to ignite lively debates at next week's teacher union conferences with moves expected to draw cross-union support for a rejection.

Third of schools dropping science subject for Leaving [Independent.ie]

EDUCATION cutbacks are leading to one in every three secondary schools dropping a science subject at Leaving Cert level.
Already 14pc of schools have dropped a science subject in the current academic year and a further 20pc say they will be forced to do the same before next September.
Physics is the biggest casualty, followed by chemistry, according to a survey carried out by the secondary teachers' union, the ASTI.
