An update on the work of CSL
- Published: 17 February 2016
The Centre for School Leadership (CSL) Mentoring Programme is progressing very well with 150 primary and 68 post-primary schools signed up for the training. The primary principals are in the Leinster area only. It is hoped that principals in other areas will have access to the programme in the next school year. CSL and Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) are working together to include mentoring in the Misneach Programme.
The CSL team are currently involved in the tender process for a coaching service for a limited number of principals which will be available countrywide from September 2016.
The third level ‘Aspiring Leaders Programme’ is also going to tender. This new course will begin in 2017. Toraíocht will continue as usual next September.
If you are a principal in the Leinster area and would like more information about the mentoring programme or if you are based outside of Leinster and would like more information on any aspect of the work of CSL, please email Anna Mai Rooney at amrooney@cslireland.ie. Your suggestions, comments and queries are very welcome.
Deadline for submission of applications for LITH and access to SNA support
- Published: 04 February 2016
29 February 2016 - Deadline for submission of applications for LITH and access to SNA support. The date has been brought forward to ensure that allocations will issue to schools before the end of the current school year.
NCSE Update – Applications for LITH and access to SNA support
NCSE and NEPS are currently discussing the possibility of your SENO accepting a shorter report where a psychologist has already carried out the assessment, and feels a pupil will qualify for resources, but may not have a full report available to schools before the deadline date of Monday 29 February. This would be on the understanding that all documentation and full reports would be with your SENO before a determination is needed to be made in May. This would allow the pupil to be included in the first round of applications. If you find this is the case in your school, then please have a conversation with your SENO &/or Psychologist.
Filling Short-Term Substitute Teaching Vacancies
- Published: 04 February 2016
A number of calls have been received to the National Support Office regarding the difficulty in sourcing fully qualified primary school teachers to fill short-term substitute teaching positions. DES Circular 31/2011, Section 4 provides guidance to schools on the options that are available to them to fill these vacancies. These include:
- Schools must first seek to employ a fully qualified registered teacher who is not retired (Using TextaSub & school’s own substitute list)
- Having exhausted all means to appoint a fully qualified registered teacher, a school may employ a retired teacher
- Where no appropriately qualified registered teacher is available, the school may employ a teacher registered under any regulation of the Teaching Council [Registration] Regulations 2009
