Sutherland says number of universities must be cut [IrishTimes]

FORMER EU commissioner Peter Sutherland has said the number of universities in the State must be reduced to boost standards. Ireland cannot afford to keep seven universities at world-class research, education and training levels, he said in an address at the Royal Irish Academy yesterday.

Mr Sutherland also backed the decision to abolish the National University of Ireland (NUI). While he was a proud UCD graduate, he never regarded himself as an NUI graduate, he said. He also backed the return of student charges.

Tag test for teachers [Herald.ie]

acred Heart NS in Blanchardstown has completed a six-week tag rugby pilot programme in which 28 teachers from the school received coaching. The programme was co-ordinated by Ciaran Lyons and delivered by Leinster Rugby/Fingal County Council's community rugby officer, Christian Stemmet.

The programme consisted of training sessions involving both teachers and pupils in a fun and safe rugby environment. The pilot programme was a resounding success as proved by the teacher interest.

Minister O'Keeffe opens €1m two-classroom school in Wexford [education.ie]

The Minister for Education and Science, Batt O'Keeffe TD, today opened a new €1 million two-classroom national school in Ballyoughter, Co Wexford.

The school, which opened in September with 33 pupils, replaces the old one which was 120 years old.

The Department sanctioned a grant of almost €1 million under the Small Schools Scheme to build the new school which has two classrooms, resource room, staff room, administration office and storage space.

Two basketball courts and a large green area are now in place, too.

Department won't force schools to teach English [Independent.ie]

The Department of Education has backed down in a row over the use of English in all-Irish primary schools.

It has officially withdrawn a controversial circular that was the subject of a High Court challenge due to be heard next week.

The circular said Irish-medium schools had to introduce English tuition in primary schools no later than the beginning of the second term of junior infants.
