Quinn urged to intervene as row threatens school opening

EDUCATION Minister Ruairi Quinn has been urged to intervene in a dispute that threatens the opening of a new school in Stranorlar, Co Donegal, for the coming term.

Finn Valley College was set to open next Monday but it was put back another week because of a dispute over payment between the main contractor and an electrical sub-contractor.

SITTING in the sun with my daughter doing the final nit-check of the summer, I asked her if she was excited about going back to school. Yes, she said, she was. But she was worried about it too. She never understood her homework.

A worm of anxiety wriggled in my heart. All my kids get far worse results for homework than for class work. What that really means is that my grades for supervision are far worse than theirs for school work.

UCC ‘wasting money’ by appealing court award

UNIVERSITY College Cork has been accused of planning a "monumental waste of taxpayers’ money" by appealing a Labour Court award of increased redundancy to a former employee.

Dr Naomi Bushin was made redundant in September 2009 at the end of a fixed-term contract as a researcher at UCC’s geography department.
