The Professor Seamus Smug Report on Education outlines areas in which the government can make savings in five key areas of education. Firstly, Professor Smug recommends extending the planned toll charges for the motorways to public footpaths, especially those leading to shops and schools. A charge of €3 to use a public footpath can be levied on pathways outside schools, thus providing funds to alleviate the inconvenience caused by chewing gum and crisp bags.

Barnardos warns of funding shortfall [Irish Times]

HUNDREDS OF vulnerable children affected by poverty and neglect are in danger of losing vital supports due to a major funding shortfall.
According to children's charity Barnardos, which provides services to more than 5,500 children and families across the State, donations are projected to be down by about 20 per cent by the end of this year.
