Fury as children return to their old prefabs [Independent.ie]

FURIOUS parents have vowed to wage a protest campaign as their children returned to run-down prefabs today.

There is mounting anger at Scoil Bride, Rathcormac, Co Cork, as the school is now catering for 400pc more students than its original design capacity. Enrolments at the 61-year-old school jumped during the boom years when five separate housing estates were under construction at one time.

When it first opened, the school catered for 60 students but 230 pupils started the 2009/2010 school year this morning. Children returned to school this morning in 10 portacabins despite being promised a new building several years ago.

Information Meetings in September [INTO]

The CEC has decided to hold a series of information meetings for principals, deputy principals, INTO staff representatives and INTO officers.

The meetings will cover:

  1. McCarthy Report proposals and the economic situation.
  2. Moratorium on promotion and staffing.
  3. CEC plan of action.

Notices with the details of meeting arrangements will issue at local level and will also be posted on the INTO website under the News and Events tab. All principals, deputy principals and INTO staff representatives are encouraged to attend their local meeting.

European Commission Green Paper on Young Learner Mobility [Léargas]

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on its approach to young learner mobility. New leash of life: four-legged friend helps Orla out on her first day back [Independent.ie]

A YOUNG girl made the leap into secondary school yesterday with the help of her new best friend, assistance dog Alice.

Orla Jordan (12) started the new term at Colaiste Cois Life in Lucan, Co Dublin, yesterday with Alice by her side.

The student has cerebral palsy, which causes involuntary movements of her limbs and body and makes walking extremely difficult. Despite making great strides learning to walk with two sticks, it was the arrival of her assistance dog several months ago that gave Orla the independence she craved.
