Schools Electricity Competition
The National Procurement Service (NPS) recently ran a mini-energy competition for 1,155 schools.

If your school is currently an Energia customer you were included in this competition.

Energy Competition Results
This energy competition has resulted in a total saving of €806,157 for the 1,155 schools involved, equivalent to an overall contract saving or cost reduction of 14% on electricity when measured against the current rates.

How to understand the results
Open the NPS Electical Results List below. Have a copy of your previous electricity bill to hand for each MPRN that your school is charged for. Note the MPRN number (11 digit code) on the bill and search the excel file for your MPRN (listed in numerical order). The search should reveal:

• Your electricity costs per annum under your current contract
• The estimated cost of electricity per annum when you sign up to the NPS contract
• The estimated savings per annum that will be made when you sign up to the NPS contract.
• The Lot number that your MPRN is included in
• The supplier of electricity when you sign up to the NPS contract

Contract Signature
In order to avail of these new rates hardcopy contracts must be signed by your Board of Management and reach the NPS office by the 30th of June 2012. NPS will then forward them to the relevant supplier(s). The contract period is for 18 months commencing on 1st July 2012. Schools will not be switched over to the new supplier until such time as the contract has been fully signed by both parties.

All lot contracts are available to download below.  Please ensure that you complete the correct lot contract by simply matching your MPRN number with the Lot Number on the NPS Electrical Results List below.

Winning suppliers for each Lot are as follows:
Energia – Lots 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 & 10
Electric Ireland – Lot 1 & 9

When you are happy with the results print off the relevant contract, fill in the details and return by post to:

National Procurement Service (NPS)
C/O Bernadette Mangan
OPW HQ
Jonathan Swift Street
Trim
Co Meath.

The relevant supplier will make contact with you once you return your signed contract to the NPS.

Best Practice

The current standing charges will be reduced significantly for schools, which effectively means a school will save money during the holiday period when very little electricity is actually consumed.

In order to assist with cash flow across the summer months NPS recommends that you submit a meter read (to your supplier) at the close of the school term and again at the start of the school term to ensure that the suppliers don’t over or under estimate usage during the holiday period.

To assist with this process please view the Meter Read - How To guide below on meter reading.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact NPS staff at the following email:

Pupil Personal Accident Insurance
Why is the Allianz Pupil Personal Accident Scheme the Best for your School.

Unlimited Time Period - The Allianz Pupil Personal Accident Policy does not have a time limit in which follow on claims can be made. This is a unique benefit for the Allianz Policy as our competitors have a set time limit in which these insured expenses can be claimed. For example, if a claim is made by a pupil for dental expenses when he/she is 6 yrs old, they may have follow on costs for years to come as a result. Our Pupil Personal Accident Policy will continue to pay these dental expenses (subject to the limit of €50,000) until the need for care has ceased.

No Excess – The Allianz Pupil Personal Accident Policy has no excess in the event of a claim, meaning parents can claim all insured expenses and not just a portion of them.

High Benefit Limits – The Allianz Pupil Personal Accident Scheme provides Medical & Dental Expense Benefits of €50,000 for each. 99% of all Pupil Personal Accident claims are made under these benefits.

Online Premium Saving – 20% Saving on your premium, when cover is arranged online.

Straightforward Claims Settlement – Allianz are the tried and trusted insurer in this field and have a typical claims settlement period of only two weeks.

Purchasing the Allianz Pupil Personal Accident Policy has never been easier. Simply log onto www.allianz.ie/schools, proceed to the Pupil Personal Accident section of the website and purchase your policy

Nora Kavanagh

nora_kavanagh

Originally from Galway, Nora began her teaching career in Scoil Bhríde, Clara, Co. Offaly in 1979 {also known as the year the Pope came to Ireland}. She spent 13 years as class teacher before becoming the first lay Principal in September 1992.

The following 10 years were spent as Teaching Principal until the role became administrative.

At this time IPPN was on the horizon but she "resisted the call" to become involved until Damian White and Larry Fleming, both fellow County Offaly Principals, convinced her to do so.

Since then the professional collegiality which IPPN offers has become an integral part of her career and provides the personal support which prior to this was seriously lacking.

Nora accepted the call to co-ordinate IPPN's Annual Conference last year at CityWest ... the rest as they say, is history!

Her other life includes her husband Dave, 4 children, 1 cat and a wide range of interests including music sport and travel.

Tom McGann

tom_mcgann

A native of Clare, Tom lives in Dublin and worked in Wicklow until his retirement in 2012. Tom became a principal in 1990 in a 6-teacher school in Rathnew. In 1997 he became an administrative principal in Ashford, a neighbouring village.

The whole area of leadership and management both fascinated and frustrated Tom and, in an effort to shed some light on it for himself, he completed a masters in Education Management and Leadership with the Open University in 2000.

In 2004, Tom became a member of the LDS team and was engaged in course development and summer course presentation. Tom was elected to the Executive Committee in 2005.

A keen sportsman, he finds it difficult to pass a TV or pitch without stopping if there is any action in progress. Due to old age and creaky knees, his playing is restricted to the odd bit of indoor football and a weekly game of golf. Soon to be writing his life story - in the meantime - watch this space!
