Tánaiste raises Green Flag at Acres National School and presents the Dan and Mary Boyle Awards [education.ie]

The Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan TD, today raised the Green Flag at Acres National School, Burtonport, Co. Donegal.

While at the school the Tánaiste also presented the Dan and Mary Boyle Awards to 24 children.

These awards are in recognition of the three most improved children in each class who receive a prize and certificate to mark their achievement.

The Dan and Mary Boyle fund was set up by Mrs Mae Berardi in honour of her late parents.

Mrs Berardi who is a past pupil of Acres National School was very appreciative of the education she received while attending the school.

Acres National School currently has an enrolment of 85 pupils.

THE number of children registered for home-schooling has more than trebled to almost 700 in just five years.

The National Educational Welfare Board (NEWB) began assessing families whose children are taught at home in 2004, when it received applications from 92 families involving 138 children.

By the end of 2008, there were 439 children from 295 families registered as being home-educated, but a further 200 were added by the end of last year.

Education ‘at risk’ as teachers wait 10 years for jobs [IrishExaminer]

SECOND-level students are at risk of lower quality education because teachers face waiting up to a decade to get permanent jobs after qualifying, a union has claimed.

 

With more than half of second-level teachers under the age of 30 on temporary contracts of a year or less, the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) said most spend a number of years moving between schools in the early stages of their careers. More than one-in- four second-level teachers do not have permanent jobs and fewer than 10% get a full-time permanent position within a year of graduation.

ASTI calls for trainee teachers to get a year in schools [Independent.ie]

SECOND-LEVEL teacher graduates should be guaranteed a year's apprenticeship in schools when they leave college, according to a teachers' union.

It would give them vital experience, while providing schools with extra resources at a time of cutbacks, the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) has maintained.

The union said the biggest winners would be students, who would enjoy a better-quality education service.

ASTI president Joe Moran said the whole issue of the way teachers are allocated to schools required an overhaul and that a new system should include an induction year for new graduates.

The National Educational Welfare Board (NEWB) began assessing families whose children are taught at home in 2004, when it received applications from 92 families involving 138 children.

By the end of 2008, there were 439 children from 295 families registered as being home-educated, but a further 200 were added by the end of last year.

In the first three months of 2010, another 18 families and 22 children have been included on the register, bringing the total number of students to 661.
