HUNDREDS of schools are expected to remain closed until next week as the cold weather continues to make road travel dangerous.
But many others are planning to leave it until the last minute to decide on whether to open their doors to pupils who are due to return from their Christmas holidays tomorrow.

Thousands of parents are in limbo as many schools will not decide until tomorrow morning whether to open.
With pupils due back after the Christmas break, hundreds of schools are expected to remain closed because of freezing temperatures.
But many others will not decide until the very last minute whether or not to open their doors. Primary schools on rural roads which have not been gritted are the worst affected.

THE Department of Education spent €130 million on school buildings and other capital works last month after criticisms that it was holding back vital funding.
Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe had come in for criticism in recent months because of significant under-spending from his €841m capital budget for last year.

SCHOOLS: SOME SCHOOL children could enjoy a longer holiday than expected if hazardous roads stop schools reopening tomorrow.
The vast majority of schools are due to reopen after the Christmas holidays tomorrow but many rural schools do not yet know if they will be able to because of the dangerous driving conditions.
