Teachers' pay cut by up to 19%, says INTO [IrishTimes.com]

TEACHERS’ take-home pay has been cut by up to 19 per cent in the past year, the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) claimed yesterday.

The union, which will soon announce plans to combat the cuts, said the full extent of pay cuts would be felt by more than 50,000 teachers when schools reopen this week. It claimed the cuts in take-home pay ranged from 15.2 per cent for a teacher just out of training to nearly 19 per cent for a principal at the top of the scale.

The cuts announced in last month’s budget range from 5% upwards across the public service, bringing the cumulative effect for a principal teacher at the top of the salary scale to a 19% drop.

There is no immediate risk of school closures due to strike action, but teachers will refuse to cooperate in a number of key areas.

Pupils will suffer in lost tuition time as teachers insist on all meetings with parents and on school planning issues taking place within normal class hours.

As well as rolling back on concessions, such as attending meetings outside school hours, unions will also refuse to cooperate with any new changes designed to improve the quality of education.
