Government slammed over budget cuts [Independent.ie]

Angry unions have accused the Government of crashing social partnership and torching the wreckage with savage budget cuts.

Around 600 public sector workers protested outside the Dail as TDs inside the Chamber prepared to slash their wages by up to 15%.

Sheila Nunan, of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation (INTO), said public servants rejected being scapegoated in the budget.

Response to clerical child abuse report [IrishTimes]

Madam, – Mary Raftery (Opinion, December 15th) writes that “as a society, we have chosen to give these bishops enormous and unaccountable power over our education system”. This situation would be viewed as farcical if it weren’t so horrifying. As a nation we must immediately move to terminate this relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and education.

Civil servants protest pay cut outside Dáil [IrishExaminer]

Hundreds of civil servants are protesting outside the Dáil at the introduction of legislation this evening which will cut their pay by up to 15%.

The general secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions David Begg said the hallmark of the Budget was "unfairness" because it targeted public servants but left the wealthy untouched.
