C of I head criticises education cuts [Irish Times]

The Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin has severely criticised the Government over plans to cut funding for three teacher-training colleges and for the decision to increase the pupil-teacher ratio in voluntary Protestant secondary schools.

In his presidential address to the Dublin and Glendalough synod this evening, Dr John Neill accused the Government of mounting a "very determined and doctrinaire effort...to strike at a sector which some officials totally failed to understand" .

Over 1,500 teachers have retired this year [Irish Times]

MORE THAN 1,500 teachers have retired this year at both primary and post-primary level, Minister for Education Batt O'Keeffe has told the Dáil.

He said 850 primary teachers and 738 teachers from secondary, community and comprehensive schools had retired this year, a "much higher" figure than in previous years. Of that figure, 321 school principals retired, 260 deputy principals, 588 assistant principals and 275 teachers with special duty posts retired.

€100m schools budget unspent [Irish Examiner]

OUT-OF-WORK builders should be given the chance to advance some of the delayed school building projects which have left spending in education capital more than €100 million behind target, opposition TDs told Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe yesterday.


It emerged last week that the Department of Education spent just €456m of the €568m it had expected to spend by the end of September, out of a total 2009 capital budget of €841m.

Include NAMA on school syllabus [Independent.ie]

I would like to suggest that the Department of Education obtain all information on NAMA (the reasons for it, the legislation and so on) with a view to making it part of the Leaving Cert course. It could be under the accounting, economics or business courses.
