Given the government's official commitment to increasing the number of Irish speakers in the state to 250,000 within 20 years, it is natural to presume that the vast majority of these will come from the gaelscoil movement. Will they though?


Given the financial situation, I suggest that as a general rule, the Department of Education and Science recognise new second-level gaelscoileanna, or gaelcholáistí, campaigns before the campaigns for primary gaelscoileanna.

Minister raises hopes of end to Protestant schools row [IrishTimes]

MINISTER OF State for the Office of Public Works Martin Mansergh’s expressed hope that the budget could bring a resolution to the row over funding of Protestant schools has been welcomed by some seeking to have the cuts reversed.

Dr Mansergh was standing in for Minister for Education Batt O’Keeffe in the Seanad on Wednesday night when he said it was not in the public interest for the “stand-off” to continue.

Teachers should not close schools [Irish Examiner]

A PARENTS’ leader has said unions representing teachers should remain in talks instead of closing down schools in the proposed public service strike next month.

The country’s 4,000 schools could be shut on Tuesday, November 24, if the three unions representing primary and second-level teachers back industrial action in ballots over the next few weeks.
