To open or not to open? That is the question facing many Principals today, in order that parents will know whether to prepare children for school or arrange child care for tomorrow and Friday. Based on the calls received by the IPPN Support Office, a significant number of schools, it seems that a majority will not re-open tomorrow, Thursday 7th January due to severe weather conditions.

So what is this funding for?
This funding is being provided to schools on the basis, that as a priority:
1. Each classroom must be equipped with a teaching computer (PC or laptop) with a wireless mouse and keyboard, and a fixed digital projector and that
2. Only when this baseline is in place should the funding be used to purchase equipment from the following list:

Unpaid leave, pay cuts and pension contributions are all headline news and very important to all of us. But what about those with most to lose – the children in our schools who don’t have a collective voice of their own. IPPN and the National Parents Council – Primary (NPC-P) decided to convene a meeting of all the education partners at Primary level. The purpose of bringing together the National Alliance for primary Education was to make a single, coherent case for the protection of primary education from further cuts and to prioritise investment in first level as part of a strategy for national recovery.

Since last Thursday, thousands of families have seen their homes and possessions damaged and, in some cases destroyed by flood water. Several schools had to close due to having no water for sanitation or a lack of safe drinking water. However at this point, it is unclear how many schools were directly affected by flooding.

Strike
Children, parents, teachers and Principals will be in unfamiliar territory this Tuesday as most people cannot remember the details of the last strike. This strike is taking place against the background of wide spread job losses, pay decreases, rising taxes, negative equity and growing public anxiety. Aside from the reasons for this strike, its merit as a tactic and the consequences to follow, it is a stressful time for Principals who are members of the BoM and at the same time members of a trade union with conflicting rights and obligations. Add to that, Principals depend heavily on the support and goodwill of parents. As one Principal today, ‘I feel like I am in the eye of the storm’.
