We have received a number of requests from Principals of two-teacher schools for advice in relation to the implications of losing their second teacher, specifically in relation to child protection and general health & safety. Every report, every evaluation and every policy document referring to improving children’s learning outcomes point towards the importance of the Principal being directly involved in the leadership and management of teaching and learning throughout the school. Fullan, Hargreaves and many more have researched and written extensively on this point. The OECD - and indeed our own National Council for Competitiveness - have all outlined this indisputable connection between the quality of leadership and the quality of learning in schools. The Inspectorate understands this truism and the evidence is the slow but gradual shift in emphasis away from inspection to self-evaluation. Every distraction that takes the Principal away from teaching and learning is a misuse of their key educational role.

The National Bureau of Criminal Investigation has asked IPPN to help with a child protection matter. The Bureau is trying to locate a child whose photograph has been found on the internet. The Bureau is trying to locate the child by identifying the school where the child last attended.

The Irish Primary Principals’ Network (IPPN) is your network. Principals created it for each other and sustain it for each other; through their mutual need to support and resource one another. More than 75% of current principals and deputy principals have been appointed since IPPN was initially formed. They have no pre-IPPN experience. Like many other organisations, IPPN has grown rapidly in response to the constantly increasing demand for supports and services.
In such a context of change; IPPN’s Executive, after a tender process, has engaged Accenture Management Consultants to review our structures, capacity and systems used to deliver services. Part of this process is to ask you in your role as school leader and key stakeholder, for input to this process.
